Boise — The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) recognizes Century Publishing Company as a 2019 Pollution Prevention Champion for reducing energy use and pollution at its Post Falls printing facility.
“DEQ is so pleased to recognize Century Publishing Company for its successful efforts to reduce waste and pollution! Success does not come spontaneously, and it takes considerable effort to maintain. Century Publishing is an excellent example of what dedication to waste reduction can accomplish!” said Ben Jarvis, DEQ’s pollution prevention coordinator.
Pollution prevention includes any technique that reduces or eliminates the generation of pollution. In contrast to most pollution control strategies that manage a pollutant’s effect on the environment after it has been generated, pollution prevention seeks to eliminate or minimize the amount of wastes and pollutants before they are generated.
To qualify for pollution prevention recognition, Century Publishing Company submitted an application demonstrating how they incorporated pollution prevention into daily operations by reducing raw materials or toxic materials purchased, hazardous or solid waste generated, water, energy or fuel used, or air pollutants emitted.
“Century Publishing has achieved notable success in reducing emissions of volatile organic compounds, as well as eliminating generation of solid and hazardous wastes at its Post Falls location. We are so happy to share their achievements with companies and citizens across Idaho!” said Jarvis.
Century Publishing Company’s pollution reduction efforts include catalyzing 90% of volatile organic compound emissions from its printing press, upgrading to ultra-efficient LED lighting in its 40,000-square foot production facility, and working with vendors to eliminate the generation of solid and hazardous waste through a rigorous recycling partnership.
